I am unaware of the additional internal cover ever returning on later distributors, but I have owned mostly early 1946-1952 parts. The IAD-4201-1 had a slightly larger distributor cap and rotor, as well as the distributor body (I believe) than the later Auto-Lite versions. If the one on your '57 had the same size internal cover as what you have now, I would say the truck had a much earlier distributor installed at one time. They should all interchange.
Correct, the only thing voltage sensitive in the distributor is the condenser.
