starting without the ammeter stock 52 PW

I have my gauges, including the ammeter, out for cleaning and painting, etc.
I would like to start the engine briefly to circulate lube and all. Can I "jump" between the wire from the starter and the wires to the ign switch/line to volt regulator and then start it, or would that cause a problem?
