Glen,
AS with most things, there is a lot of info on the net about this subject. I had my pond stocked early last spring with 100 bass 5-8 inchs, 650 crappie and ten thousand fat head minnows. It was a new pond so the minnows supplied food for the bass and crappie. The crappie are supposed to spawn and supply food for the bass in the future. I guess things are working becasue I see a lot of new minnows in the shallows and haven't seen any floaters. :-) I did read on the net that you need to harvest the crappie or they will take over the pond. So, this next summer I'm going to allow some fishing but with the strick rule that any bass caught will be thrown back.
My fish supplier has been a lot of help with info.
Good luck,
