There's a recycler here on Long Island, who has a huge collection of Mack B models. Over the last 40 years, whenever one would come in, the owner would pay the scrap value, and horde the truck. He now has dozens of them, in all states of disrepair.
Is there a slim chance that the recycler in your story may have saved the PW, for his own use? I hope so.
