Bearing insert won't fit

I am trying to put main bearings in my 99 318 block and can not get the front thrust bearing cap to slide around the block. It appears it is not wide enough. I took it out and held it up agaisnt the old one and it looked the same size. I tried to put the old one back in and it didn't go either.

Is there a special trick to get this front main bearing insert in? I was hoping to get the crank and rods in tonight.
