Since your son paid with a U.S.P.S. Money Order, and sent it through the mail, it sounds like he has been on the receiving end of MAIL FRAUD.
It sounds like it is time to take it up with the Post Office. You can report Money Orders lost or stolen. See if you can get the money back that way. If they find that the mother actually has cashed it, then I would call that "Stolen" if you have no goods to show for it.
Regrettably a hard lesson for a youngster to learn.
