To my hoist I hung an engine balancer. The balancer had a short section of chain at each end, each with a rectangular metal plate about 1" by 5" by 1/4" thick with a hole at its end.
I removed two head bolts at opposite ends of the head and diagonal from each other, then attached these plates there.
It came out pretty easily and as it came out I adjusted the balancer to get it level; it is not that heavy of an engine.
You can rent or buy a balancer for this.
I then mounted the engine on an engine stand to work on it. I had to fab a piece of 1/4" steel plate about 12" by 12" to bolt up to the back of the engine to allow the use of the stand's arms. Modern engine stands do not seem to "fit" the 230 without an adapter plate.
