Hi Guys,
Well last time I was on here we were chasing high speed miss on my '48 flat fender. I finally found the problem. 2 burnt valves an intake and an almost cracked in half exhaust were the culprits.
Carston and I spent Labor day working on de-carbonizing the head and top of block. We also resurfaced the old valves and replaced the bad ones with new ones from Vintage and aloha NAPA auto parts. While we were at it we put in a new thermostat as the old one was frozen open and we could get no heat in the cab.
Question... What is the best way to get all the sludge out of the motor? I found tons of it in the valve galley. I can only assume the rest of the engine is the same condition. a buddy of mine suggested draining the oil out of it and filling it with fresh oil and adding one or two quarts of ATF and running it 200 to 300 miles then draining it and putting fresh oil in after that. Will doing this hurt the motor? Are there other ways of getting the crud out?
Well, Carston and I will be out on Wednesday night lapping the valves in, getting the block prepped for the new head gasket and valves. we will also be pulling the carb off and rebuild it with a fresh kit.
Talk to you guys soon.
Thanks for the advise.
Chris Becker
