A Cummins B3.9 would fit.
The current top rating for a B3.9 is in the B3.9-130, a turbo, aftercooled version
that produces 130hp@2500rpm and 333lb-ft@1500.
For a bit less money, buy an older model of the same motor as used in something like
a Chevy route van. I picked up a 4BT out of an Entenman's bakery truck last year for
$2500 including everything from the radiator through the rear axle. My 1990 4BT is rated
at 105hp@2500rpm and 290lb-ft@1500rpm. It is turbocharged, but not aftercooled.
Since the Cummins is a relatively low rever, back it up with a Ranger Overdrive and the
stock transmission. A four cylinder Cummins, Chevy bellhousing, and Ranger Overdrive are the same total
length as the stock motor and bellhousing.
I've got a couple custom Ranger Overdrives that will fit between a Chevy bellhousing and an early
Dodge New Process transmission such as the NP420 left over from my latest project (a '53 M37).
