Check to see if number 1 piston is top dead center on the compression stroke. Then check to see if the distribuitor is pointing at #1 plug wire. Distribuitor timing/placement is usually the cause of the backfire that you are seeing. If this checks out OK you might have a timing chain that is badly worn and it might have jumped some teeth.
