Most electric fuel pumps on the market are rotor type. This means that they are better at pushing gas rather than sucking it up a tube. You should place the pump as close to the tank as possible and as low as possible. There should also be a filter upstream of the pump.
Another thing to consider: if you use an electric in line with the mechanical pump, you will fill the oil pan with gas very quickly if the diaphram on the mechanical pump springs a leak.
And always use an oil pressure shut-off switch in the electric fuel pump circuit.
