I am sure many different engines woudl fit in the engine compartment. However, the challenge is being able to adapt a suitable transmission to the engine you choose. Most diesels are low rpm engines and will require 4.89 ring and pinions as well as a 5 speed overdrive transmission for respectable highway speed with out running at red line.
I am sold on the Cummins 4B series married to the NV-4500. The Cummins 4B series married to the Ford Small Block ZF-S542 (5 speed OD) works nice also. Either of these combinations will cruise at any legal road speed in a PW/WC or M37.
