Engine head plug removal?

I am trying to remove the bolt with a square head on the block of my 251 that is being used to cap the inlet for the heater valve. Its located on the rear right corner, Mine is frozen and Im fearful of rounding the flat sides. I am leary of using heat for fear of cracking the head. Any suggestions?
