A row of punch marks down the center of that narrow siamesed section. Punching raises a ring of iron around each punch mark. The hope is that the raised ring grabs the gasket, keeping it from blowing back and forth until it fatigues and blows out. I guess it worked, but that was 25 years ago, and NOT a daily driver. Sold it in '03 after parking it for 14 years or more.
Punch the head, not the block. Heads are cheaper to mill back to flat.
