I think 88 is the norm.
Make a trip to radio shack, and buy some 100 ohm resistors and some of those test leads with the alligator clips on each end. Then clip a 100 ohm resistor between the wire and ground, gauge ought to read empty. Then, twist both the ends of two resistors together, so the resistors are in paralell. This makes a 50 ohm resistor, clip that into the circuit, it ought to read somewhere near 1/2 tank. If so, gauge is OK, and needs the 1-88 ohm sender.
