actually, you check a thermostat by putting it in a pot of water with a candy thermometer and GRADUALLY heat the water while monitoring the temperature on the thermometer to see if the thermostat opens and closes when it supposed to. replacing a old defective thermostat with a new defective thermostat can lead you to think its something else.
