Well...I guess the same could be asked why a guy would take a rusty old inferior DPCD original bolt, cad plate it & re-use it when new bolts are readily available.
If you're restoring something...the idea is to get it as close as you can to assembly line new. I guess Steve has customers willing to pay the extra few bucks to have the engine as Mopar designed it.
I personally have no problem boring one of these blocks but I disagree with you Steve....the weak link of the 230 motor is the crank. That's why Dave at Vintage is getting $700 for NOS ones.
We've run 230's in all our gas welders since the 50's. The crank lets go long before the bores show any noticeable wear.
There's a guy on Vancouver Island that specializes in high performance Mopar flatheads but the big obstacle is making the bottom end hold together on these.
