The Mercedes 5 cylinder turbo diesel came out in the early 70's and was used in cars and trucks through the mid 80's. To my knowledge they didn't offer a manual transmission with the TD in any of the cars and the manual transmissions used in trucks (at least that I have seen) have a one piece transmission/bellhousing. So to get the bellhousing, flywheel etc you need to find a 4 or 5 cylinder naturally aspirated diesel car with the manual transmission.
Now, keep in mind like most engines, the earlier ones had more power. I don't remember the specs off the top of my head but you can look it up on Wikipedia easy enough.
As for fuel economy, these engines are great. I had 38 inch Gateway Monster Mudders with a 4 inch suspension lift and 6 inch body lift and still got about 18mpg. If I had left the truck stock it might have got up to 25.
If you want to talk just e-mail me a phone number if your in the lower 48, I have unlimited long distance.
