In all fairness, it should be pointed out that labor/management relations have always been like a pendulum. When one side has the power the pendulum can swing too far in one direction.
When owners had all the cards they took advantage of labor. When labor organized, they took advantage of the owners. As long as both sides prospered it worked. In the 1960 the trickle of cheap imported goods began. People, many whom were union members began buying those goods. They weren't better, but they were cheaper. I remember in the 70's there were 7 major automobile manufacturing plants in Los Angeles. Many of the employee parking lots were full of imported cars.
Many in the union leadership were slow to recognize the trend, some still think it is the 1930's. Only a few union leaders realize that business and entrepreneurs create the jobs, NOT the unions.
I've been a union member since 1973, a business owner and labor/management contract negotiator for a few of those years. Some unions work with management, some don't, those are the unions and trades which are going under.
The influx of cheap imported products has created a para-dyne shift away from the US and the US dollar and has caused much of the pain you see now with food and energy prices. We shot ourselves in our fat bloated foot...
All empires decline, most decline from within, we just fast tracked our decline by creating democrats.......= )
