I guess it depends on where Wal*Mart moves into. When they opened the Wal*Mart in Smelterville, lots of people were happy to go to work there because they paid $10/hr compared to the $6/hr that was the max for most of those small town businesses. We have 3 family-owned small town businesses here -- a grocery store, a drug store, and a hardware store. Wal*Mart didn't hurt the hardware store a bit. The guy who owns it is a great guy, treats his employees well (including medical insurance), and keeps his prices as competitive as he can. Sometimes he's even cheaper than Wal*Mart. The drug store doesn't have a chance, but it's still dragging along. Every time I go there, even before Wal*Mart, they don't have the one thing I'm looking for, usually something simple like a watch battery or some shoe laces (they're out of the size I wanted), and the employees are clearly unhappy and unmotivated by $6/hr. The grocery store's a little better, but their prices are really high and their produce is always pretty tired looking. Their wage situation is similar. I think it only stays in business because we don't want to drive 15 miles just to get one thing. All three stores are actually owned by good guys, but if two of them go out of business, it won't be entirely Wal*Mart's fault.
