The big issue with 98.5-02's is the lift pump pressure as Eric mentioned. I have gone through a couple on my '01. There are very good replacements out that should take care of the problem. As Eric also mentioned you need to monitor your lift pump pressure. It's important to put a gauge on the rig. You don't have to eagle eye it all the time but you do need to keep tabs on it. Some say never go below 10 PSI but someone just posted recently on one of the diesel sites about checking the bypass flow after the injection pump. He wrote he saw no decrease in flow until the pressure dropped to 3 PSI and less. I was told by a Cummins mechanic to not let it go below 7 PSI.
