What an adventure let me tell you. My son Stephan and I were up at zero dark buffalo yesterday and heading for the ferry to Vancouver Island during rush hour. We were heading back to Denman to finish building our new house. Since it is almost finished I decided it was time to move the old 48 too her new digs. I had my son follow me in his newer Dakota (Just in case). It is a 40 mile drive to the ferry terminal which usually takes about an hour through traffic. Just a little slower with an old age citizen, but more picturess at the slower speed. No problems getting to the ferry other then one slightly peeled tire and two litres of oil being used due to a leaking oil return line. The ferry trip was pleasant as usual and we arrived in Nanaimo at 1000 hrs. We wound our way through the city and headed north towards Courtenay. I kept asking Stephan what speed I was doing and it seemed to be a constant 40 to 45 mph.
It's kind of like flying a ww1 fighter plane (when the noise hits a certain pitch you know you are going fast enough and that all is well with your machine). We stopped in Parksville to change the rubberless tire and to add another litre of oil. The poor old girl hadn't been out in awhile I suspect (at least not at any type of steady speed) as all the oil seals were showing sign of seepage.( How much and where can I buy all new seals). Anyway after the tire change and breakfast we headed north along the inland island highway which winds along the coast through various small towns and villages finally arriving at the Buckley Bay ferry terminal at 1400 hrs. A short ten minute ride and the old girl was finally home. Now it will be time to slowly clean her up and bring her back to her old glory days. I can tell already that she is feeling good about being in a place where the pace of life is just a little more sedate then the big city.
