There was a progression in the improvements in the differentials.
You are correct that the early ones were two and the later were 4. The early 3/4 ton had the 8 3/4 gear set in them and moved to the 9 5/8. You often see an early 3/4 ton with an 8 3/4 differential in the front axle and a 9 5/8 in the rear. My carryall is that way. In fact the rig and pinion gear for the front of my truck came out of a 1/2 ton and I bolted them to the carrier that was originally in my truck. The "new" 1/2 ton gears were basically brand new.
I believe but can not prove that some early 3/4 ton 8 3/4 diffs were 2s. The quickly were made 4s for the added strength which were then replaced with the 9 5/8 for the additional strength.
About axles. I know that you can replace the 8 3/4 differential in the 3/4 ton axles with a 9 5/8 differential if you add an extra gasket and have the larger differential cover . You can use the same axles with both diffs. I do not know about the 1/2 ton axles. If you happen to have an early 3/4 ton differential I do not know if it will work with 1/2 ton axles. I have only worked with 3/4 ton axles.
