timming on older engines is something, one must aquire > first most part ignition timing is set to make starting easer > for cold winter starting i set everything to a reatarded setting ( easier starts) > in the warm weather advance the timming But not to the point of pinging or the starter is working hard to turn over the hot engine> the engine operating temperature is a good guide to varify proper timing > other problems with timing is the gasoline it self, in my opinion gasoline is not near as volatile as it was 20 or 30 years a go > there is a direct connection between the accelerater pump and the mechanic advance i would call it a balance > i would watch the timming marks at mechanical advance and adjust acc pumps linkage to eliminate hesitations > a lot of this "mechanical stuff is long since forgoten" ~J
