To answer the other question, nothing's wrong with the existing diff except that it has three broken bolts stuck in it, one hole with failing threads, and a crummy gear ratio that makes 1st gear a useless stump-pulling gear and red-lining at 55mph (if it had a tach).
So, does it need to be replaced? Not if I can find a way to remedy the bolt situation. But, if I do have to replace the diff, at least I could try for one with a different gear ratio.
