As I recall, I converted by gutting the top section, but leave a collar of the outer rim. The collar is tall enough to hide the paper element. Then cutting two big aluminum 'washers', one for the bottom with a big hole- I left the 'velocity stack' in the bottom section- that 2" diameter chimney. It adds length to the intake runner. The washer for the top I cut an even bigger hole, and 'rolled' a rim downwards. It was soft aluminum, and I could do that in my vise with a hammer and piece of pipe. The rim holds the element in place. Then I retained the rings into the housing with dum-dum. The only filter I found to fit it was from one of the aftermarket/performance brands.
I'll go take pics now, and get the filter part #. I can email pics, perhaps someone can host them?
