From what I know (little) of Dodge manufacturing, the coversion to 12 volt happened in 1955, but old 6 volt parts were installed until the warehouse had sent all its remaining 6 volt supplies to the assembly line. If you study your serial number against the information on Phil's site, you may be able to approximate in what part of the year your trucks were manufactured, early, middle, or late. That knowledge may give you insight into why your truck has 6 volt. It may also give the rest of us an idea of when the switch occured.
