Beginning in 1866, in the wake of a devastating civil war, Americans have paused each spring to remember their war dead and rededicate themselves to the principles of liberty and union. On this day, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation, including more than 4,000 who have died in battle or support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and call to mind the many thousands who remain in harm’s way.
In honor of our veterans, John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields,” written for those who fell on the Western Front during World War I.
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
I had occasion this weekend to attend the wake and funeral of a WWII US Army veteran. What I came to realize, is how dedicated a group of individuals our veterans are. Over 60 years have passed since John served his country, but he kept close relationships with his fellow veterans all these years, and actively worked with many veteran's organizations.
The veterans I met this weekend left a lasting impression as some of the greatest people on earth. At all times during the wake, a veteran was present. Veterans from WWII, and every war since, were in attendance at the funeral mass, and at the graveside. Much like family, they gathered to say farewell to one of their own.
Thank you to all who have served this country, and all who currently put themselves in harm's way to keep this country safe.
