I have not looked inside a bushing type water pump I have always sent them out for rebuild. But, the marine grease I have seen put into wheel bearings that is NOT water soluble will destroy wheel bearings. The grease moves out of the way so the water can fill the bearings. they wont mix at all. I dont remember the grade of grease but it is light blue and called "marine grease". anyway it seems the same problem could occur in a water pump. some mixing keeps lube on the bushing if the seal weeps.
