Not sure if by "push down solenoid" you mean a manual floor-pedal starter switch vs an electric solenoid or a bendix. I have trucks each way and so long as it works I don't have a preference. One advantage of the floor switch is your average punk kid car thieves have probably never seen one before.
I'm not sure what that has to do with the coolant leak though. It sounds to me like coolant is leaking out around one of your manifold studs. Some of them go into the water jacket. If you take it out, put sealer on it, and put it back in, it should be fine. Hopefully it's not one of those in the middle because to get those out you have to remove the whole manifold, which means removing the carburetor, scraping all the gasket gunk off of both parts, maybe getting the manifold milled while it's off, maybe breaking off a stud, etc...
