ok i was 16 years old when this happened but was in my 2nd year of my apprentiship >and i didnt want a come back on a major project > when the permatex reps came on the scene with this product (one was black that hardend and one brown which was to stay soft and flexable) was to replace any sealant, gasket cement, pipe dope, any where two parts met to prevent leaks > the idea was, at the time you didnt need any thing other than two tubes of permatex in you tool box to solve any leaks between parts >this engine had a by pass oil system it was fed ,from the block by a line to the oil filter then at the filter was a T connection one line went to the engine oil gauge in the cab ,the other line out of the T went to the cylinder head >at the side of cylinder head was drilled port in with a 1/4 pipe plug thread > this passage went to the top of the head were another pipe fitting went to a line , that had a pipe fitting( tubing ) in the centre of the rocker shaft that supplied oil to "entire" rocker shaft> so instead of usind teflon tape at evey pipe thread i used the brown permatex like the instructions said > but a little of the permatex exess from every pipe thread had entered the oil system at each pipe fitting, savy > enough of this goop stopped the oil from entering the rocker shaft > the rocker shaft staved for oil> the bushings in the shaft and a pile of white metal started to enter the lubricating system enough of this dusty metal to plug the oil pick up and boom ~ J
