We get the same thing at work. I tell the boss "Did you see the tolerance on the print?" He says "Don't worry about it +-.005 is fine". I tell him "As long as you know, ok". It really does increase the price. It could mean the difference between hard tooling and soft tooling. A difference could mean thousands of dollars in tooling. You're right most of the time the tight tolerance is unecessary. We can usually tell from the part. And sometimes we'll ask the customer. They'll say "Oh +-.005 is fine." Even +-.010 is ok sometimes.
