Brain Fart? Wow, not sure how I convinced myself to write that, but I was in a hurry so I guess I didn't think it through.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the algae will be a very good source of energy simply because the energy it uses is free (sun...whew, I got it right this time). It provides with a simple to use form of biofuel as well as a deposit for our CO2 emmisions. There is no real drawback becuse the algae is self perpetuating, only requires shallow water, sunlight and CO2. We shouldn't even need all that much of it compared to the oil we use now. If we converted all our electric power needs to be run from Nuclear power plants, then the biofuel from algae would only be used for vehicles. Once we got sick of that, we would all have 100% electric vehicles (made possible by our stupidly cheap nuclear power) and there would be very little demand for any sort of hydrocarbon fuels.

That said, the chances of this becoming a reality are very slim. While there is still oil being pumped out of the ground almost ready to use, there are no immideate financial reasons to make large algae farms or nuclear power plants. I fully expect we will burn every ounce of fossil fuels we can until they become so scarce that we have to scramble together biofuel and nuclear power.
