Weird. That would be a hassle. My 12x36 has correct inches by .001 on feed screws, cuts inch threads exactly, etc. Not saying it's great, but for the money it's not junk either. Maybe your friend's was an early model. I've seen a lot of older Chinese gear that has metric fasteners, whereas most of their new stuff is all English.
In any case, the Chinese machinery bargains are going away, what with the rising price of metals, the falling dollar, and the fact that Chinese workers are wanting to get paid more. Once they're making as much money as the Americans and the Germans, which has to happen eventually, we'll so who can make better machines for the price.
