Air ports will be exhaust leaks ?

I doubt if there is a flat at the mating surface of the older heads to cover the hole.

Perhaps you can tap them for socket headed pipe plugs? If you can find the plugs...

Otherwise, I wouldn't see a big problem with changing one at time. Though the older design probably breaths better.
