I've actually seen pictures of it being done that way -- block the wheels good, jack one rear wheel off the ground, throw a belt around the jacked up one, and drive whatever -- sawmill, thresher, buzz-saw... I bought a sawmill once that had an old truck tire for the main belt pulley. It ran off a flat-head Ford V8 industrial powerplant. Should've kept the motor, but sold it when I was tight on cash.
Back in the '70s they had a deal you could put on the rear hub of your truck to split firewood with. It worked the same way -- block 3 wheels, jack up the 4th and let it spin. The splitter was just a big fat conical screw that was supposed to screw its way into the wood and split it. In the instructions it said to put a brick or rock on the gas pedal and adjust it for optimum speed.
