Recently I also found red stuff in my "Gascolator" fuel filter w/ the bowl and in my carb. I thought it was rust. However, my complete fuel system is new, and the tank has been epoxy lined. I too have been using the "liquid lead" so perhaps this could be the problem.
In the mean time I have run a K&N AN-style cleanable filter which filters to 10 microns. Hopefully this will do the trick.
I have since learned that the 230 has hardened seats, so that a lead style additive isn't necessary. Also, very little lead is necessary to protect seats anyways. The guys with older BMW motorcycles often run a tank of leaded gas through per year, and that keeps enough lead on the seats to prevent wear. So, to be on the safe side, I will burn some avgas (100LL) from time to time. (Don't tell Carol Browner and her eco-nazis.)
