That's a real good reference. It gives pretty much everything you need to
know about one of the most common questions. However, I'd just like to add
that with an old-fashioned generator (not alternator) system, you don't
necessarily need to change a "6V" generator to a "12V" one. The 6V generator
will work fine producing 12V out if you just swap in a 12V regulator.
Theoretically it's not perfect because the field resistance is lower so it'll
take more field current to get the output voltage up which means the generator
and regulator will run a bit warmer. I did it on my M37 though and everything
is still working fine. Sticking with the 6V generator also saves trying to
jerry-rig a mounting bracket.
