I ran down the 6-volt battery truning the starter while diagnosing the fuel problem so I thought it wouldbe a good time to install the new Optima Red Top battery. The Optima has tons of cranking power. It ran down a little bit, but not much before getting the truck started.
Here's the problem. With the Optima battery, the voltage regulator makes a loud clicking sound. I removed the cover and found the cut out relay contact points were opening and closing like crazy. there was also some arcing at the voltage regulator contacts.
I reinstalled the original battery and the noise stopped. Are the charging demands of the Optima too much for the regulator? Is power flowing back through the cut-out relay to the generator? Will a diode of the correct amperage prevent this back flow?Is arcing at the regulator contacts normal? Thanks.
