Considering that a typical bolt is tempered at 450 to 500 deg.F and allowed to cool gently over a couple of hours, this is still too much heat. The fact is that you can change the molecular structure of the U-bolt just by using a cut off wheel on an angle grinder to shorten up excess length. New U-bolts with new proper nuts and recommended torque procedure is the only way to go.(and of course a properly calibrated torque wrench). Sorry to keep dragging this one out but this idea scares me.
