I would like to see these sold over here too. Currently diesel price is $4.25/gallon in Michigan, but it should come down.
I note however, that my 1991 LeBaron V-6 5-speed does get 35mpg on gas. (60-65mph on turnpike). When I see them advertising cars that get 30mpg, I wonder if they really do better on the highway. If not, we haven't made much progress in the last 17 years.
