strange wdx distributor-What am i looking at?

I just removed the distributor cap on my 47 wdx. Under the rotor is a silver dome shaped piece that completly fills the inside of the distributor. It has a hole for the shaft to come through but otherwise it seems to be part of the distributor case. I don't want to fool with it without knowing what it is. I was looking to inspect the points but i can't find them. If anyone knows what i'm dealing with any help would be appreciated. Thanks Stu
