If you're talking about COSTCO, it's to check the accurately of the cashier.
I've been stopped and told at the door that I was overcharged (wrong number of items).
COSTCO has the lowest percentage of "shrinkage" in the industry, mainly because it's a membership store and they pay their employees well above average (many are union).
It's a great place to get fuel and tires for your Dodge....
