I have my Grandpa's Craftsman square pipe threading die set. This set was probably made in the 1940's or 1950's. The 3/4 inch die finally wore out so I took it to Sears for a replacement. These dies are not like the modern Rigid units that you see everywhere. The tool has one head where the dies of different sizes clamp into.

The people at Sears told me that they had never seen a die like that. It says craftsman right on it. I explained that it was an antique, and without this die, the set was incomplete. They said if I could find a replacement, and I brought in the receipt, they would reinburse the cost to me.

I went home and found a replacement in the McMaster-Carr catalog. I was taking a chance, because all I had to go by was the thread size. I was just hoping that the thickness and external square was the same as my old part. It arrived the day after I ordered it and it was a perfect match to my old set, without the Craftsman name of course. Sears honored their deal. They reimbursed me for the cost, tax, and shipping.
