You should try a solid color polyurethane.
It basically looks the same as enamel only it's hard like base clear. It sprays like enamel only it's hard like a hockey puck by morning.
I find base clear too glossy for vintage vehicles. I can't really put my finger on it but it just looks different.
Single stage polyurethane can be wet sanded & polished the next day & on a vintage vehicle....that's my recommendation.
