Yeah, that was my abridged version...= )
It depends upon what vehicle you're driving.
I was basing it on the comments that gasoline was going to be $4.00 per gallon (it's almost there in SoCal @ $3.65).
At a minimum most diesels get 30% better fuel economy (an advantage of $1.20 at $4,00) and assuming that your diesel is a 300,000 miles motor, doesn't need spark plug or distributor maintenance every 20,000 miles, you'll see a considerable saving with diesel, that will be a push after the difference is more than $2.00 per gallon.
Some with 4BT's get over 30 mpg.
The new generation of Jeep and Dodge diesels are going to get over 30 mpg, the Patriot at the Chrysler LLC Blog got 56 mpg, the same as the VW TDI Diesel.
The gas powered Patriot gets 30 EPA, the Diesel Patriot gets 56 that's approx. 86% better. So at $4.00 gas you would still break even at $7.44 diesel with the Patriot diesel.
An Announcement From Chrysler should be coming soon about the Chrysler LLC diesel offerings.
Chrysler President Jim Press and already announced the new Cummins for the 1500 Ram.
