My 7.3 went through 3 motors, 2 auto transmissions, and just about every trim part, handle, knob, etc. The first motor lasted 4,800 miles....Ford replaced it free, it was out of service for three weeks.
Fuel economy was 13.9 mpg, empty, loaded, fast or slow, as each motor died the fuel economy dropped to 8.5 mpg.
I towed a relatively light, 5,000 lb travel trailer, it felt like it really worked the motor and fuel economy dropped as a results, and on long grades with the trailer the exhaust ran as black as a tractor pull truck, this was a stock motor.
I'd keep looking for a Cummins, one that hasn't been chipped or played with, it will be a better long term value.
The reason that the prices are so high are that the Cummins holds it value better than any other motor, even better than the GM Isuzu (DuraMax).
You may have to travel a bit to find a nice clean Southwest truck.
There are some VERY clean 1st Gen and early 2nd Gen Dodges in the west, in your price range, ask Marty, he has found about 352 of them....= )
