Why pay somebody else to do what was my business to do? Plus, at least I knew whose fault it was if it needed to be re-done.

What learnt me that was a Vega motor. It had been rebuilt by a large local machine shop. Relined the cylinders with iron hat-shaped sleeves. Good plan, for a Vega. But the rings wouldn't seat. So they paid me to tear it down. In addition to undersized rings, the mains and rods had burnt a blue coating onto the insides. I don't know what they had used for assembly lube, but bear grease would have been better. After that I did all of the reassembly myself.
