Bob i've researched this subject for a '47 WDX i'm about to start. Here is what I've figured out so far:
Various versions of the NV4500 were offered by Dodge as early as 1994. Most FFPW lovers I've talked to about engine swaps think a diesel conversion is the way to go (Cummins 4BT in particular). If diesel is your thing then research adapting a 6BT NV4500 to run behind a 4BT or consult with Paul in NY. Here in California i currently pay $3.85 a gallon for diesel -- which is way more expensive than super unleaded. So I'm leaning toward the 6.1L Hemi crate motor offered in the SRT Jeep (425 H.P. / 420 lb.-ft torque) for my '47 WDX . It is a POWER Wagon after all ... isn't it?
So if you are considering an NV4500 with a 5.7L or 6.1L Hemi here is what i've figured out so far:
In 2004 & 2005 Dodge offered the NV4500 for all Heavy Duty Ram trucks (2500/3500 series) in both the 4x2 and the 4x4 versions. The NV4500 came behind the 5.7L hemi. The NV4500HD version came behind the 5.9L I-6 Cummins. So if either of these motors is your swap you should be able to get a factory bell housing, master clutch cylinder, etc direct from Mopar.

I really doubt the 5.9 cummins will fit in a FFPW though. I believe (but need to confirm) that the 5.7L/6.1L Hemi will fit in a FFPW if one uses a custom pressurized radiator (matching the hemi's water input & output sides), slim electric puller fan, custom motor mounts, transmission mounts, etc.
You can special order an NV4500 from a few places. I think a short tailhousing is needed if you plan on running a divorced transfer case. High Impact Transmission & Gear (for example) offers a 6" short tail shaft NV4500 (from the 2WD) with a fixed yoke but i don't think this version allows one to use the power wagon mechanical speedo (unless we can figure out a way to use the rear axle or transfer case for this). They also offer the 13" tailshaft version of the nv4500 with a slip yoke & a fitting for mechanical speedos though. So maybe a married TC will work. I'd like to use an Atlas TC which I believe can be bolted directly to the NV4500 & provides the needed passenger side drop for the front wheel drive. I understand that the NP205 might also be an option here but haven't really researched it yet.
If you want to run your winch you will need an NV4500 PTO that runs both forward and backward. You can get the 352 series PTO from Chelsea for the NV4500. This PTO has a standard output shaft of 1 -1/4" keyed with forward and reverse operation. It has an intermittent torque rating of 140lbs. According to the sales dudes from Parker it fits.
Note that my research has mostly been done online. Most of the other people on this forum are real mechanics with real busted knuckle. So I could easily (and should) be corrected here. I'm just a technology geek with a serious dodge truck affliction.
Keep in touch on your plans & progress Bob.
