I have a wood stove with a catalytic converter. It's a Vermont Castings. It's great. I've had it for about 20 years now. There is very little visible smoke, and it works very well. It recirculates the gasses down to the bottom of the firebox where they are re-ignited (I guess) before the gases exit through the chimney. The stove burns hot and well and you can damper it down and it will burn for a good 8 hours. I bet the modern Vermont Castings stoves are even better.
